Earth Day is April 22, 2017, and there are big and little things that a homeowner can do to contribute to helping save the environment.

Tech-Friendly Solutions to Living Green

In a world where technology can seem complicated or daunting at times, homeowners do have access to more green and easy to use options today than ever before. For instance, take the smart home, from smart lighting, doorbells, cams, smoke detectors to intelligent thermostats, energy monitors, solar panels, and energy star appliances, it has never been easier for homeowners to live green.

Other ways technology has made it easier than ever for homeowners to commit to more green living is the ability to reduce waste. Most home service providers offer the option to go paperless. Or if you live in a condo, you can reduce food waste and save on food cost by growing your own indoor/outdoor food and herb garden.

Opting to equip your home with smart solutions or to go paperless could be quick and easy ways to live a bit greener.

Get Local

Certainly one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint, and therefore your impact on the environment, is to buy local, shop local and eat local. Since we’re heading into the warmer months, there’s no time like the present to check out your neighbourhood on foot. You might find a great farmer’s market selling fresh fruits and vegetables, or a delicious restaurant that uses only the freshest, farm-to-table ingredients. You’re not only supporting local businesses but also exploring your neighbourhood, and becoming part of your community, Reducing your environmental impact by opting to leave the car at home, may just be the quickest and easiest way to caring for the enviornment.

Reduce Your Consumption

From recycling to water conservation, staying aware of our energy consumption and waste habits can have a huge, positive effect on the environment. Purchasing energy efficient appliances will not only be good for the environment, but your wallet too. There are also the “little” day-to-day things you can do, such as remembering to turn off the water while you brush your teeth, or opting to buy a reusable water bottle. These might seem simple, but the impact can be large. According to a study by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, just turning off the tap when brushing your teeth could save up to 8 gallons of water a day, which adds up to 200 gallons a month!

As Margaret Mead, an American cultural anthropologist, once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
